Hi,
as part of a school assignment regarding subcultures, I'd like to ask what a few short questions about the furry culture. My main focus is about why people choose to be a furry and be part of a furry community. You are free to answer the questions in long or short, the important thing is that you answer the questions properly and true to your own feelings and experience. Lastly I'd like to add that I very much appreciate your time and your answer

1. How would you explain what a furry is/what it means to be a furry?

2. Was there a main underlying reason that you become a furry and part of a furry community? (ex. having a feeling of not fitting in, being around like-minded people, an interest in animals etc.)

3. Have you experienced any particular negative or positive consquences after "embracing" the furry side of yourself?

4. Do you feel like there are any common misconceptions about furries, in case which?

5. What is something that you very much appreciate about this or any other furry community?

6. If you'd like to add anything, please do so here...

Hello, I will answer your questions and help you with your study to the best of my abilities, though by no means is my opinion fact, just my view on the fandom.

There are many variations of being a furry to my experience, those range from those who just join furry sites to those who take interest in anthropomorphic animals (humans with animal features) or feral, to those who have a passion for animals or fantasy creatures to full blown fur suiters who go to conventions.
I fall pretty much in the first three categories, I tried a fur con once and wasn't comfortable so stick with mixing in with sites like this and do the odd bit of furry writing and role playing.

In regards to why I joined the furry fandom I always felt a kinship with tigers, and the furry community helped me express that in a way I couldn't normally and felt I could be more true to how I felt.
I won't go heavy on the details but I will say this much, I fitted in with other like minded people here and other furry sites than I ever have with people in real life, and it was thanks to that I was able to overcome past trauma and socialise in a way.

The furry community is very much picked on, sadly more so these days and people label being a furry as 'bad' or 'retarded' or 'wrong.'
Thing with furry's they are not a lot different to every day people in some ways, they are as diverse and different as all people are, they are pretty much thought as perverts or sexual deviants but that is a wrong and toxic misconception. The reason furry's are picked on a lot is mostly because the vast majority of people don't understand it, or it is different so try to downplay it and pick at parts that would shame and leave out the parts that really matter. I feel at least that as a community we are a friendly. close knit group and have seen so often how others will spring to someone's aid.

If I was to say one positive thing about having joined the community for the past 11 years, I would say it has helped me discover who I am, helped me communicate and become a better person than I once was. I've found friends, and I have found love through being a furry when in normal society would rather I just fade away.

Anyways I hope this has been helpful and will answer any questions best I can, provided they are not too intrusive heh.

You answered the questions very well and gave your own take on the matter (which is the point), so you've been very helpful and I appreciate you taking the time!

Welcome, and I will do my best to answer the best I can:

1.) For the first question, I think the answer of what is or what it means to be a furry, I think that answer is best for the individual themselves. It is rather common among the Furry Community that no one can really agree on what a furry exactly is....so, I would say it is up to each individual in the community as to what a furry is to them...since so many different members could all have different views on what they believe a furry is/should be.

2.) I think one of the biggest reasons I sorta feel in with the furry community is because it is one of the most friendliest and accepting communities I have ever been a part of. Like anything, there will always be a few bad apples to ruin it, but for the most part, I feel that an individual from the furry community might be one of the individuals who would be the quickest and most accepting when it comes to accepting an individual for who they are, wither they are a furry or not.

Another reason I like the furry community is the art. Whether it is adult art or more safe/clean art, furry artists seem to have some of the most detailed artwork I have ever seen. Plus, furry artwork, to me, is way more interesting and creative that, say, artwork of non-furry characters. Human characters, as diverse as they can be, eventually get boring and all start looking the same sooner or later. But with anthro or furry characters, the possibilities are almost endless due to the wide array of species (both real or made up), colors of fur/scales/feathers/etc. and so on and so fourth...especially when you start having hybrid species.

3 & 4.) While I haven't personally had any negativity directed towards me, I have seen some of it in other sources of media. One of the biggest misconceptions is that ALL furries are sex freaks who love to dress up as animals and have big orgies or even like to have sex with real animals and in reality, that isn't the care. While it is true that some in the community may do those things, it falls back to my bad apple comment from above. The amount of people in the community that would be considered "sexual deviants" is overall, a rather small percentage compared to the community as a whole. And the whole "If you are a furry, you are gay." deal is also a misconception because I have met and talked with furries of all different sexual preferences: straight, gay, bi, and so on.

5.) I think the biggest thing I love about the furry community is the overall acceptance of it's members. While some in the community can be an ass, most that I see or have dealt with are some of the most laid back, coolest, and most accepting individuals I have ever met. That and I feel like you could just open up and talk to a member of the community about anything, and most of them would be willing to sit down and talk with you and try to help you if you are having some sort of problem or issue, even just lending a listening ear if you need to just vent or get something off your chest.

All in all I enjoy being part of the furry community and there probably isn't any other community I'd rather be a part of.

Thank you very much for your answers. And while I understand what you mean that each persons take on what a furry might be, would you mind giving your take on the matter?

I really don't have a take on the matter. To me, being a furry is whatever the individual wants it to be and that is really about it. I am not here as some sex freak or artist or whatnot. I am just here to be a part of the amazing and friendly community.

That and being something of a writer, the RPing aspect of the site helps me practice and improve my writing skills.

First off I would say that this is an amazing thing your doing for a school project, looking into a social group such as this can be rather niche but yield a lot of perspectives and social profiles.

1. How would you explain what a furry is/what it means to be a furry?
A furry is someone who feels a connection to animals and identifies with a more primal side perhaps hidden away in our minds back from the days when we were evolving from apes. It should be noted that furries are incredibly creative given by the amount of artwork, music and writing we produce collectively and even by our unique fursona designs. Furries also seem to draw in people from all lifestyles and backgrounds; A father of two, a young man in the process to become a woman, a couple in a polyamorous relationship these are just some of the many diverse social beings here.

2. Was there a main underlying reason that you become a furry and part of a furry community? (ex. having a feeling of not fitting in, being around like-minded people, an interest in animals etc.)
Not going to lie, it was sexual. I was with my first bf at the time and he spoke of a time where he was sexually active with someone who owned a tiger suit. I looked into this and found it sparked something within me before getting in touch with furs around me and even researching the fandom for my own art project in college. It then became much more of a community to me and I felt much more comfortable this way, being able to play certain roles, engage in conversations all through the safety of my computer screen. Looking back, I was always fond of wolves and dragons…I actually asked my parents for a pet wolf when I was younger XD.

3. Have you experienced any particular negative or positive consquences after "embracing" the furry side of yourself?
For this it’s a bit of both to be honest; In a negative way it has played on my over active imagination where at times I see the fantasy of an anthro populated world much more appealing and just how laid back things can be. Referring to my previous point of chatting through a pc screen, I guess it has made me much more socially awkward in face to face situations. On the plus side though, it provided me a support network and allowed me to travel, experience things I never would have done before and meet a lot of interesting people. Some people have come and gone from my life and others been there firmly.
Heck, several years ago on another RPing forum I got chatting to a young guy and we had many adventures together through our characters, the forum was shut down and we had just got one another’s contact details. Conversations became a little more about one another as we both went through heartbreak, pain, highs, lows, celebrations etc all whilst rping inbetween. About two years ago we considered the idea that we could try being together, we met for the first time in March 2019 and as of 2 weeks ago we are now living together in his country as a committed couple.

4. Do you feel like there are any common misconceptions about furries, in case which?
Oh there’s plenty: They fuck animals, they fuck each other in the streets, they will corrupt our children, they are a sin! With any social group there are always the few individuals that the world and media will focus on to demonize without looking at the bigger picture. I personally feel we have a very affectionate community in general and that is often mistook for sexual rather than in a caring sense. Other’s may also say that it is full of drama, ok who’s life isn’t? Again I’ve noticed that people who are suffering, ‘outcasts’, those wanting a place to belong are drawn into the community as a sort of safe haven.

5. What is something that you very much appreciate about this or any other furry community?
I mentioned it before but the creativity! Look at the fantastic art produced and those creating stories and music. Even people who just rp, seriously read it and see you are being creative right there putting yourself in a character’s shoes to experience something which is not happening in reality. Fursuits, so many designs and features with some having signature styles between the makers. Plus we celebrate these more openly and express it so on various sites.

6. If you'd like to add anything, please do so here...
All I can say further is, good luck on this project and please let us know once it has been graded
