Experience earthquakes (not scared)?

Here in NZ we get hundreds of earthquakes a year, most so small you cant feel them. But every now and then the ground reminds you who is truly is charge. Come to think of it i haven't felt one for a while.

Anyway, anyone out there get earthquakes? If so, are they big or small most the time? I hate the "instant" ones where you just violently shake without warning. The ones that start with a light jolt and intensify are actually the ones i like. I must be crazy if ish likes earthquakes xP and i do, a little reminder of the forces deep down, but at the same time i hate em cos they cause huge damage and casualtys, not nice.

Oh of course, the Pacific ring of fire smooths right past your location. Up over California and up to Alaska, and yeah. Do you have any apps that tell you of any earthquakes? We do here.

I live in the middle of the South American Plate, which could explain why I've never experienced any... But there is a city about 100km/62mi from here that I often hear is having small tremors, apparently because it's located right on a shear zone.

I live in upstate NY. I've only experienced one earthquake when I was around the age of 9 or 10. I woke up one morning and the entire apartment was shaking. My mom thought the house was being demolished and freaked out.

I can understand that you're fascinated with earthquakes, I have it like that with powerful thunderstorms. Myself being from a tectonically dead area (Poland), my only experience with quake of any sort was when they brought down a huge factory chimney some half kilometer away. I was home, felt a strong jolt, looked out to see what's up and the very prominent tall chimney was gone.

I have relatives in northern Sweden, they get harmless plate-rattling tremors from the tensions in the rock dating back to the ice age. The whole region was pressed down by ice and it keeps rising back to this day. I do want to experience this but so far had no luck.

Yeah, guess you can tell, geology is one of my special interests.

CA tends to get some every so often but the only one I kinda felt turned out to be from one miles away and here's the funny thing, only me and my mother felt it. Thankfully was far enough away from us all we got was some gentle shaking but my dad and the dog to this day still think we're both crazy as they didn't feel it. Aftershocks are weird but for those who endure the true quakes I hope you all stay safe as those can get real scary from what I hear
