Guild Wars 2

This is embarrassing.

After such a long time, I thought my main class is Guardian, but for some reason I seriously struggle with the class now. I could not find any proper build to have good damage and also decent self-healing to keep myself alive. Warrior gains health from Soldier's Focus with burst, gaining Might, or landing critical hits (dual-wield) ; Necromancer can siphon health, easy enough ; recently I found the trait "Carnivore" that lets Ranger gain health from crowd-controlling the target, and Soulbeast (when merging with the pet) makes it even easier because I can actively choose the pet skills to crowd-control the enemy.

But, I seriously struggle with Guardian. I've tried Soldier, Berserker (not a good idea, very low health and defense), Carrion, Cleric, but none of them really works out like I want. I end up lacking a lot of damage output or a lot of self-support to keep myself alive for long.

I just now learned of the trait "Altruistic Healing", which makes me gain health whenever I apply boons to allies and/or myself, which I thought would be a game changer. However, the heal doesn't feel as good as I thought it'd be.

I also see people using spears for Guardian a lot, but I just can't get the hang of it. I'm already struggling with damage, I really can't think of how to do damage with a weapon that is meant for healing.
Update : I tried out Virtuoso spear (strike dmg) and axe/torch (cond dmg). Still not really good for surviving long fights like Warrior and Necromancer that I mentioned above, but I still managed to do fairly decent damage.

Meanwhile, I just cannot get anything to work with Guardian. My son gave me a cond dmg build that he can use consistently to solo champions in Janthir, and very detailed instructions on how to combo and rotate... but I failed flat at every single step.

I already blew up too much money on different equipment for my Guardian, but at this point the only build I am KIND OF decent with is cond dmg, with axe/torch and pistol/pistol. I guess strike damage is not for me with this class.

Yeah it's rather hard to figure out how to hurt foes with a healing oriented weapon, mesmers must be dreading the rifle outside of support roles for that very reason. I think the willbender has a trait that whenever you burn foes with your second virtue..the flaming line it heals you but I think there's a skill that refreshes the first one and causes that to heal you too. Been a bit but my guardian has no issue with dmg and self heal but I've kinda swapped to dual pistols for a while now. Been meaning to get back to my reaper as I need to finish learning that spec's powers so i can work on the one from EoD.

Oh and I swallowed my pride and dipped my toes into Maguuma again to complete some dragon stand events.... even with flying that zone is a nightmare and the mastery takes forever to build up as events and such give you barely any exp for it. I level path of fire to current masteries leagues faster than HoT masteries... which sucks as I've considered going back into that hellish forest to finish mastery of my glider so I don't got a stamina bar for it anymore. Dragon Stand events are painful though as there's one that forces you into a room full of lethal gas that I'm guessing means I need the immunity to poison mastery or whatever for.

But, I seriously struggle with Guardian.
Well, I decided that my Guardian isn't going to be Almorra anymore. I'd rather not disrespect her legacy and legend with my horrible performance. So, instead, in my head canon, she changed class to Warrior. Even got a proper name for her too, Goldkeeper (lol).

I have a MUCH better time with Warrior and the 3 elite specs, a lot more than Guardian, especially with my Might-based build and Berserker gear. So, here she is, ready to reclaim her name.

Heck, even with Warrior spear/rifle, I can survive better than Guardian (and Warrior is very melee-oriented). That says a lot about my struggle with Guardian, as embarrassing as it sounds.

Hmm Paragon has been shown wielding a spear a bunch, wonder how that plays out. I've quietly decided my reaper will use pistol and dagger alongside the greatsword...but I feel I need to test out the pistol idea first before i settle on such. My Weaver uses spear alongside sword/dagger but the sword dagger might swap to hammer for all i know...lot of testing to do. My ranger is now SoulBeast and has daggers for one weapon set but retains the long bow. My mesmer...idk yet..I know I wanna keep greatsword but the other weapon set... idk yet. Dagger for sure as my mesmer was going to be Virtuoso but...what works with dagger? I sadly got a fair bit of testing to do it would seem... My revenant is doing well but I've still gotta finish EoD with them among other things. Hopefully I'll figure out a character I'd feel comfortable using well enough to farm maguuma as I need to work on my glider and thanks to that bit of living world I did I unlocked the ancient magic mastery line so...an extra down skill would be nice to get too...at some point

Pistol for Necromancer is more condition damage than strike, whereas Reaper focuses more on strike than condition. Pistol 2 is multiple shots, and 3 daze. Though, you can make pistol work for strike damage ; I use the specialization Death Magic to have as many Carapace stack as possible with every condition I cause.

My ranger is now SoulBeast and has daggers for one weapon set but retains the long bow.
My Soulbeast uses a hammer, and has a warclaw and lightning wyvern pet. I always merge with them to gain access to their skills. Hammer 3 dazes the target twice, and 5 stuns them. The beast skills of warclaw and wyvern also have a lot of crowd control. Combine all of them with the trait "Carnivore" from the Survival specialization, and I have a ton of health steal. I use Berserker equipment and I can survive a lot of the titanspawn in Janthir thanks to the crowd-control and health steal.

Dagger for sure as my mesmer was going to be Virtuoso but...what works with dagger?
I might suggest pistol with dagger, to keep the long range. Pistol 4 has good burst damage, and 5 has crowd control (stun and daze). Though, I find spear a lot better at stacking up blades and pressing damage. Use 2 first to get the Clarity buff and stock a blade, then 5 to stun and get close (which also fully recharges 2) ; use 2 again to get the buff again and stock another blade, then 4 to have 2 phantasms (which would be 2 blades). Combine this with the trait "Infinite Forge" and you'll constantly have blades to spam.

But, I seriously struggle with Guardian.
Update (yet again) : I finally figured out how to do this, with Willbender condition damage.

So, after reading up on wiki, I finally understood how Willbender virtues work : the passive is only enabled WHILE they're active.

For example, normally F1 would automatically trigger after every 5 attacks, to cause burning. However, with Willbender, you have to activate F1 first ; DURING the time F1 is active, the passive burn triggers every 5 attacks.

So, what I do is... spam as much as I can while F1, F2 or F3 is active. For this, I use axe/pistol, with AOE skills with multiple hits and cause burning, like the consecration "Purging Flame", the spirit weapon "Sword of Justice", and the physical skill "Whirling Light". After activating F1, F2 or F3, my combo is to put down the AOE attacks, then spam like hell.
  • Purging Flame
  • Sword of Justice
  • axe 2 (symbol)
  • Whirling Light
  • pistol 4 (multiple shots)
  • axe 3 or pistol 5
  • repeat

I had to switch out the spec Domination for Inspiration for some self-healing, and equip the signet in the healing slot. Less damage, obviously, but better survivability : I heal myself whenever I stock a blade or use a Shatter skill, and Virtuoso with spear and the trait "Infinite Forge" is just spamming non-stop. Otherwise, I'd get killed really quick.

On that note, I also got my Guardian full crowd-control, with Berserker gear and the trait "Glacial Heart" (heal whenever I crowd-control an enemy). So, what's my setup ?
  • Dragonhunter : F1 (pull)
  • Axe 3 (pull)
  • Pistol 5 (stun)
  • Longbow 3 (knock back)
  • Longbow 5 (a hard crowd-control version of immobilize)
  • Bane Signet (knock down)
  • Hammer of Wisdom (knock down)
  • Sanctuary (heal me and knock back if the enemy tries to get close)
This build has... sub-optimal damage, but it has a lot of crowd-control for me to keep the enemies off me, and/or to break the boss' defiance bar, and with good range too. Otherwise, solo, I'm sticking to Willbender cond dmg.

I've tried using the wiki to answer this but...any idea where would be the best spot to farm caffeinated skritt in the crystal desert? Odd feeling I'd need to kill them before they escape but I do gotta kill them

it sems very luck-depended...
Yeah as I've visited a lot of the spots it may tell me to go but never find a box with that darn thing inside, the one time I may of seen one it ran the hell away and got killed by someone else which didn't count for what I need them for. Maybe I should just build the dang things instead of this madness at this rate... literally only need to tear that dang thing's head off but I can't find the bloody things. Worse...I gotta find and kill one one very class if I want their PoF weapon, compared to PoF collections getting EoD ones are cake walks and for EoD I gotta fish up a exotic item for some classes.

I just don't even bother with the elite class weapons, and now that I know I need to hunt down these damn rats to finish the collections, that's a big nope for me. I'd rather just try to do the wizard vault objectives and daily festival tasks (Festival of the Four Winds at the moment) to farm gold. Oh and do the "return to" achievements, too, for the legendary necklace. It requires doing things in the Living World seasons, all the way up to Icebrood ; things like mining ores, chopping wood, gathering crops, and the likes.

Oh and jumping puzzles ; OF COURSE gotta have jumping puzzles. I have Blish HUD and it's been a huge help with knowing which direction to go, but I'd still need to look for shortcuts if possible, because fuck them.

So, I finished the achievement for Janthir Wilds Act 2 to get the Relic of Atrocity, which improves life-steal damage and healing by 15%. That one definitely goes to my Necromancer, no questions asked.

It leaves me with the Janthir Wilds box (I forgot the full name) that I got from WvW reward track, so I chose Relic of Mistburn (whenever I gain might, gain additional might), and this goes to my Warrior, obviously.

With those two now fully decked, my Warrior continues on with the "Return to [Living World]" achievements to get the legendary free amulet, while my Necromancer handles the festival activities (such as th Four Winds one right now), and mastery points in Janthir Wilds.

Well, on second thought.

The game is lagging a bit much for me to enjoy it these days, and I feel rather burned out / pressured from grinding achievements... I think I'll take a break once the Festival of Four Winds ends.

Sucks though, cuz I just found a pretty fun power-based Scourge build with tons of AOE for open world... but, oh well.

I think I'll take a break once the Festival of Four Winds ends.
Today is the last day of Festival of Four Winds this year, which is also when I take a break from the game. Aside from the lag issues, the world-versus-world objectives in the Wizard Vault can get extremely stressful, and I'm starting to feel burned out from it, too... so, it's better for my mental and physical health to take a step back.

Not relevant to the topic of this thread, since it's a different game, but I'm also taking a break from Elder Scrolls Online at the end of this month, too. Not touching Guild Wars 2 or Elder Scrolls Online, at least for the entirety of September...

Always a good idea with games like Guild wars and Elder Scrolls to take a break, burnout sucks and is best avoided. Female charr voice files should be in the rest of Janthir now, I'll need to finish janthir on my engineer so she's not just standing around feeling forgotten. My guardian having gotten most the janthir achievements means I can enjoy what bits of the story I can without worry, I just hope the next expansions's story doesn't repeat Janthir's mistakes. I can guess we're getting a bunch of asura themed stuff next expansion but...idk I wish we could drive the charr tank even if its a skin for the turtle. That or being able to build them for decorations on the homestead, needs to be more charr decorations besides just a statue

I have to hope for the story to be impactful, too ; Janthir Wilds left a lot to be desired for me, and I still can't get over how anticlimatic the last missions were...

Anticlimatic and how the last zone can burn in a garbage heap for as far as it's concerned as in order to get a map clear you gotta wait for the meta to kick off as certain spots are only available during it. Last chapter felt rushed almost which is terrible in practice as hey I'd of been willing to wait for it till voice lines came in but now the voice lines are there and they're offering them as bonus achievements if you complete the last two chapters now that voice lines are in and that actually revoked my completion of the last chapter by an achievement as they added a point for that specific one. Last chapter however gives you nothing, no new armor piece, no weapon or anything...just a small handful of points and a title if you pet a cat at the big celebration party and leave without talking to anyone.

3rd day of not touching GW2 once... and I realized how much more free time I get from taking a break, it feels great. Not relevant to this thread, but I'm having a blast with an offline game that I've played for probably the 3rd or 4th time by now, as well as getting back to art.

Though, I already know what I want to do (or rather, avoid) when I get back to GW2 : NOT touching WvW, ever again.

I said it before, I absolutely hate Tangled Depths (Heart of Thorn) and Bava Nisos (Janthirs Wild), and I still do, but those 2 maps are now slightly more tolerable with Blish HUD to help me navigate. However, WvW has taken the cake now.

Every new day, I open the game already dreading, what do I hav to do in WvW for Wizard's Vault daily objectives. Every new Monday, I dread even more at the weekly objectives. Whatever it is, I have to hope I don't run into enemy players, or at least enemy players that also know that I don't wanna fight, only want to complete the objectives and be done with it, because I cannot PvP for the life of me. I don't have the reflex or build for it, and my laggy connection does not help either.

I really like GW2, but I hate WvW mode, and I don't want to feel like doing a job I hate when playing it, so I'm avoiding it like a plague from now on.

I'd rather grind for mastery points.

Lots one can do outside of those zones and WvW as you can level alts, explore the map, farm mastery points, farm achievements, begin the process of farming materials to make legendary items like the legendary relic you'll only need to make once and all your 80s can use it. If you got people to tag along with you the dungeons can be farmed as well and a fair sum of farming materials can be sold for a fair amount of coin. Also the whole mastering crafting skills. Then there's the whole homestead thing from building decorations and furniture to putting your homestead together however you like. Lots to do in GW2 but breaks are always good as burn outs as I've said are awful. I'm planning to take a break from it when I get my paws on a certain game I'm excited for but I may not get till October, hopefully it keeps my mind off the mild depression I'm enduring being unable to figure out why my windows 10 can't be extended for a year when windows 11 is being screwed over a ton and costs so dang much. Hopefully I'll figure out a solution as I was wanting to see how the new GW2 expansion plays out but it doesn't come till October

I'm aware of other things to do, it's just I want to get the daily and weekly objectives done to get the astral points and the chests. Though, a lot of times it means I have to get in WvW too.

I've now decided that I don't care about the points or the chests all that much, anymore. I'm just gonna focus on PvE like you mentioned, and go to custom PvP when needed.

As far as I'm concerned, getting legendary runes seems like the best start : have all 6 of them for all 6 armor pieces, and you never have to worry about buying new runes again.

My objectives when I get back to the game, though ?
  • Finish all achievements in the "Return to..." section, in Living World, to get the legendary amulet
  • Finish all mastery points for core game (even though I'm not really feeling it with crafting legendary anything, yet)
  • Unlock the beetle mount in PoF (I already have enough mastery points, just gotta grind it a bit)
  • Finish all mastery points for Janthirs Wild
  • Map completion (core game) with my Mesmer
  • Finish all personal story with my Warrior (she is Almorra now, not my guardian anymore)

There's actually a cap of seven on those...the aquabreather counts as armor so the cap for it is 7. Then for weapons I think it was 8 or 9. A lot easier to make than the relic but the relic is only needed to be built once and then any new relics you get are recorded and the legendary one can swap to any of them at any time you wish so long as you've had it at one time and unlocked it for the catalog. I've been looking into them for a while now but I keep thinking i'll need to buy something for one of the gifts to make them but besides the key gift that decides what it'll be you end up making or buying the other three gifts about 15-16 times I think to get all of them and maybe relic but once made it's a lot of weight off your shoulders as they only need to be built once and the upgrades can be removed and swapped as much as you want for free on all your characters. Then the only huge things to gather parts for would be legendary armor, weapons, accessories, trinkets, back item, the new expansion adds a legendary aquabreather apparently but legendaries are optional and not forced which is a beautiful system
